Buying a used car in Ireland

When you opt to purchase a used car from a professional trader, such as a garage, car dealer, or a business operating on an online marketplace, you’re afforded consumer rights similar to those when buying a new vehicle. These rights encompass expectations of quality, durability, and compliance with the terms stipulated in the contract.

While used cars may not meet the exact standards of new ones, the quality should correspond to the price you paid. In the event something goes awry with your purchase, you may be entitled to remedies, including repairs, replacements, refunds, or price reductions, as governed by consumer protection laws.

Before finalizing your transaction with a professional trader, it is advisable to perform due diligence. To ensure a smooth and reliable buying experience, consider the following steps:

*Inquire about the car’s history and the number of previous owners. Many dealers will provide a comprehensive report on this.

*Ask if a written warranty or guarantee is available.

*Scrutinize the vehicle for wear and tear, including tires, wheel arches, oil, seatbelts, lights, and wipers. The trader should openly disclose any defects or issues.

*Request essential documents, such as a National Car Test (NCT) Certificate (for cars over 4 years old), a Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) Certificate (for imported cars), the car’s service book, and the handbook or manual.

*Verify the odometer reading and cross-reference it with the NCT certificate and the car’s dashboard odometer. A discrepancy may indicate odometer tampering.

*Additionally, inquire about two sets of keys and obtain a signed payment receipt. 

It’s advisable to research the trader’s reputation by seeking recommendations from others or checking online reviews. Membership in industry associations, such as the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), can be a sign of ethical business practices and a commitment to resolving any issues that may arise during the buying process.
